Nothing can get the office pumped up on a Friday morning like playing real loud They Might Be Giants’ version of “Istanbul”.
Sure, they recorded it in 1990 but (most) everyone here at Going Interactive is quite fond of it (re: high school, college days). And those youngsters who aren’t familiar with it quickly pick up on it’s extreme sing-along catchiness. “Istanbul was Constantinople, Now it’s Istanbul not Constantinople, Been a long time gone, , Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night.”
Curiously I was watching that new FOX comedy Raising Hope (which is really pretty funny) and they played the original version of it during an opening sequence. My wife was amazed when I sang along to it out loud. I said “Hey! That must be the original version of that song TMBG did”. Then to my surprise they closed the show with the TMBG version. It was an awesome set of audio bookends for a “Jenga” themed episode that involved Cloris Leachman rescuing baby Hope from a dangerously junk cluttered shed by removing objects one a time Jenga style as “Istanbul” plays.
